15 Storage ideas for all rooms
Can you ever have too much storage?
Whether your house is grand in stature or perfectly pocket-sized, storage seems to be a universal problem. Whatever the size of your home or the number of belongings you have, storage is always a welcomed solution.
Let’s look at ways in which we can safely store away our precious possessions and throw away that need to have a huge declutter. After all, who doesn’t love stuff!
1. Storage Ottoman Bed
The biggest item in any bedroom is usually the bed, so why waste all that valuable space when it can be put to good use as a huge storage solution? A bed with storage: Simply lift the mattress on a storage ottoman bed to access all that big, beautiful, useful space. If your wardrobe is too small to house both your summer and winter clothes, then a storage Ottoman bed is a great place to vacuum pack away those out-of-season outfits until the weather has changed back.
2. Divan Storage Bed
If lifting a mattress for storage seems daunting, then a divan bed base with in-built draws is an attractive alternative solution. The handy, easy to pull out drawers upholstered in sumptuous fabrics or leathers is a world away from unsightly plastic boxes peeking out from under the bed. Extra bed linen, pillows or pyjamas can be safely and beautifully tucked out of sight, allowing you the de-cluttered headspace to focus on a peaceful night’s sleep.
3. Vintage trunks and suitcases
You may have some hiding up in the loft or stumble across one at your local vintage market. Displaying classic trunks, wicker hampers and old leather suitcases on top of wardrobes adds not only an extra layer of storage but also visual interest and charm. Fill them to the brim with all those little precious memory keepsakes that you have no idea where to store but cannot bear the idea of parting with.
4. Storage footstools
Everyone loves putting on their feet at the end of a long, hard day. If you opt for a storage footstool, you can delve inside, grab your slippers, the latest magazine, and a cosy blanket that has been safely tucked away, just waiting for you to come home and enjoy.
5. Storage Sofas
Wanting more storage in your lounge, but not wanting to compromise on the size of your sofa? Storage sofas are the perfect solution! Board games and children’s toys don’t just have to be stored in flat packed furniture from the Swedish company. At the end of an evening, they can be safely stowed away underneath luxurious fabrics, patiently waiting until the little ones are ready to play again.
6. Storage stairs / L shaped boxes
The stairs are a huge part of the home and with a little clever carpentry, a wealth of storage space could be unlocked. Whether you opt to create under stair cupboards or have your Carpenter create clever stair drawers, this useful space should not be overlooked. On a limited budget? Utilise L shaped wicker baskets that can sit handily at the bottom of the stairs, holding items that are ready to go up on your next trip.
7. Shelves above doorframes
If your walls are already filled with artwork and lighting fixtures but you are still in desperate need of storage… then look up. That sneaky little space, hiding above the doorway is the perfect place to display books, vases and all those little holiday souvenir trinkets you struggle to find a space for but just cannot bear to part with.
8. Peg board
Super functional yet super stylish, pegboards are a perfectly practical and visually pleasing way of displaying items that might normally spend life tucked out of sight. An absolute must for any crafting queen or DIY doer, you can ram pegboards with ribbons, tools and pretty supplies making your creative space look just as beautiful as the crafts you create.
9. Back of door storage
The back of a door is a big useful space that can be easily unlocked as a useful storage solution. There are a multitude of practical accessories that can be purchased to help you store anything and everything, from spare towels to a ton of soft toys.
10. Sofa beds
Sofa beds are a great way to help you maximise your use of space and change the functionality of a room in an instant. Tightly tucking away the perfect spare bed for when your welcomed guests arrive without compromising on your daily use of a room.
11. Shelves above windows
That little nook of space is crying out for reading books, spare vases and potted plants. Shelves above a window will give you the option to bring the outside in, adding a flourish of foliage without compromising your view.
12. Recliners
If you’re living room is a little cosy, leaving you little space for a footstool, but you’re desperate to pop your feet up, fret not, as an electric recliner could be the key to solving the problem. Recliners allow you the option to rest your legs when needed but then the footstool part can easily be popped away when you’re ready to jump back up on your feet.
13. Bath panelling and storage
Tucked behind the bath panel is a sliver of space that can be cleverly carved out as a storage cupboard for all the cleaning products you could ever need to ensure your bath is forever sparkling clean.
14. Vintage Printing Trays
Vintage printing trays, awash with teeny tiny shelves, are a practically perfect spot to store all those little treasures that struggle to find a permanent home but still deserve to be seen, such as Lego people, thimbles and colourful cotton reels.
15. Behind the door shelves
When you open the door to a room, you can also cleverly close the door to a super slim cupboard. If there is an alcove of space behind a door in a utility room or bedroom, build a shallow shelving unit that will magically disappear when you enter said room and leave the door open. Clever!
Plenty of storage ideas for you to unlock spaces, ready and waiting for you to fill them up with more of those precious possessions you love, reflect your personality and what make your house and home.
Happy hording 😊
