How To Be Bold With Colour

By Darlings Of Chelsea

Deep, dark inky blues are en vogue this season, but with such a bold, dark colour, it can all become a bit… much. Here’s some tips on how to use big colour in clever ways that keep your rooms looking chic and inviting.

Neutral base, bold accents

Keep your base as neutral as possible – whites and blacks work best as a background – and bring in colour by displaying artwork and accessories in bright shades. This will show them at their best and stops the colour becoming overpowering.

Feature Wall

Having a feature wall isn’t a new idea, but it’s stayed popular because it provides a great way to use a favourite, bright colour, without overdoing it. You might also want to consider using a patterned or textured wallpaper with some colours or larger wall areas, so there isn’t a solid block of overwhelming colour.

Light Considerations

How much natural light does your room get? If it’s generally flooded with natural light, you can go for much darker colours. If your room doesn’t get as much light, then you will want to go for brighter, more saturated hues that will reflect more light, making the room more welcoming.

Create Texture with Tones

Once you know which base colour you’d like to use, look at the range of tones that work well with it and use these throughout the space as this will add depth and texture to your look.

As I said at the beginning, dark, inky blues are on trend at the moment, but if blue really doesn’t do it for you, don’t use it. You have to live with the colour, so make sure its one you really like.
