Interior design trends 2014
Colour Trends
2014 colour trends seem to be bold, strong colours think royal blues, vibrant purple and strong reds and you’ll be somewhere in the right ballpark. Check out this teal blue example with green and white accents – adding a modern take to a traditionally furnished home, or this lime-green living room with black and white. Not used to bold? If you’re worried about overdoing it with strong colours, just limit it to a feature wall and bring your space together with soft furnishings from the same colour palette. If you’re more daring, strong colours can work well on all walls when combined with light furnishings, too.
Bathrooms Trends
The spotlight is on bathrooms this year, with that often-neglected room being transformed to make a real statement in your home. Feature walls, bold colours and contemporary furnishing and design are in – such as this stunning forest feature wall that really makes you feel at one with nature. Sinks and baths are boxy with strong lines to complement the bold colours, while pastel rugs, curtains and blinds of the same colour palette pick up accents in the décor and pull the room together perfectly. Not into boxy? Sleek curved baths are more than acceptable this year – as long as they are contemporary and minimalist, anything seems to go.
Soft furnishings
Patterns are the name of the game in soft furnishings such as rugs, cushions and curtains, helping to balance the room’s colour scheme. If you’re decorating bold, try to keep the furnishings soft with a hint of the same colour palette to subtly bring the colours together – think pastel florals and regal patterns to add that touch of class. Hide is also popular this year, as ever, with sheepskin and cowhide rugs ever popular.
Furniture Trends
Rustic seems to be the buzzword in furniture at the moment, with wooden chairs and tables complementing traditionally-coloured sofas. Vintage leather trunks and chests are a classy way to add a little extra storage space and look great too, especially in a rustic room. To stick with the pale furniture scheme, whitewashed sideboards and dressers combined with traditional chairs with pastel upholstering can really make the room come to life – just combine with a stunning white leather sofa from Darlings of Chelsea such as our gorgeous Camden sofa and your room is complete!
Art Trends
No room is complete without a few signature pieces to really bring a space to life. Enigmatic black and white photo prints of different sizes look classy, while sleek one-off sculptures can add a great focal point to any room. Thinking outside of the box is in too though, meaning you can make your own pieces of art from any bits and bobs you might find – a bit like this rustic-looking driftwood heart or this statement piece made from old maps. There are some great pieces out there and some unbelievably talented artists just waiting to be discovered – smaller names allow you to get one-off, signature pieces and add a real talking point for dinner parties and soirées – don’t forget, great art is an investment and your pieces may be highly sought after in years to come.
